Webcam / 01

Live preview.

The full track settings the browser negotiated with your camera — resolution, frame rate, device label, facing mode — read straight from the MediaStreamTrack. Use this to confirm what your conferencing app is really getting.

Notes

Measured FPS is sampled with requestVideoFrameCallback when available (Chromium / Safari), falling back to the rAF loop and the video element's currentTime delta. The negotiated rate may differ from the advertised one — that's the camera adapting to lighting.

Frequently asked

How does this webcam test work?

We request access to your camera via the browser's getUserMedia API and render the raw MediaStream into a video element on this page. The track settings panel reads directly from MediaStreamTrack.getSettings(), so resolution, frame rate, device label and facing mode reflect exactly what the browser negotiated with your camera hardware. Measured FPS is sampled with requestVideoFrameCallback where supported, falling back to a requestAnimationFrame loop. Nothing is uploaded, recorded or sent to a server — the stream lives only in this tab and is released the moment you close it.

The browser is blocking my camera. How do I grant permission?

Look for the camera icon in your address bar — click it and choose Allow. In Chrome and Edge, you can also visit chrome://settings/content/camera to unblock devicecheckonline.com. In Firefox, click the padlock and remove the temporary block. On macOS, you may also need to grant your browser camera access in System Settings → Privacy & Security → Camera. After changing the setting, reload this page and click Start camera again.

Why is my webcam showing a lower FPS than advertised?

Cameras drop frame rate when lighting is poor — sensors need a longer exposure per frame to gather enough light, which physically caps FPS. A camera marketed as 1080p60 will often deliver 1080p30 or even 15fps under indoor lighting. Other causes include USB bandwidth limits (a 4K camera on a USB 2.0 hub will throttle), background apps using the camera, or thermal throttling on laptops. Add more light, plug directly into a USB 3 port, and close Zoom/Teams in the background to see the true maximum.

What is a good result on this test?

For video calls, aim for at least 720p at 24fps with stable measured FPS — fluctuation of more than 5fps suggests lighting or USB bandwidth issues. Streamers and recorders should target 1080p30 minimum. The negotiated codec is informational; most browsers default to VP8 or H.264. If the resolution panel shows your camera capped well below its rated maximum, run the resolutions probe at devicecheckonline.com/webcam/resolutions to see every mode it actually supports.

How is this different from your other webcam tools?

This page is the live preview — it shows one negotiated mode and measures real-time performance. For a full capability scan of every resolution your camera can deliver, use devicecheckonline.com/webcam/resolutions. To evaluate green-screen and chroma-key quality with live histograms, use devicecheckonline.com/webcam/greenscreen. All three tools run entirely in your browser with no upload.
