Touch / 01

Multi-touch.

Put as many fingers on the pad as you can. Each contact gets its own circle, sized by touch area. Stylus pressure and tilt appear where supported. The maximum tracked count below shows your panel's simultaneous-touch limit — phones typically do 10, iPads handle 11+.

Notes

Source: Pointer Events for stylus / pressure / tilt + Touch Events for legacy multi-touch. Pressure is normalised 0–1; many capacitive phones report only 0 or 1. Touch area is exposed as radiusX × radiusY in CSS pixels.

Frequently asked

How does the multi-touch test count fingers?

We listen to the PointerEvents API, which fires a unique pointerId for every contact on the screen. Each ID gets a coloured circle that follows the touch position in real time. We also read the width and height fields to estimate touch area, and pressure for stylus or 3D-touch capable panels. The running maximum at the bottom of the page is the highest simultaneous-contact count we have observed during your session.

How many touch points should my device support?

Modern Android phones report 10 simultaneous touches — the practical ceiling for two hands. iPhones officially support 5 but the panel itself often tracks more. iPads and Galaxy Tabs handle 10-11. Windows touchscreen laptops vary from 5 to 10. If you can only get 2 contacts to register, your panel may be a budget resistive screen or the OS is intercepting gestures before the browser sees them.

Why does pressure or tilt show as zero?

Pressure and tilt require hardware that supports them — typically an Apple Pencil on iPad, S Pen on Galaxy, or Surface Pen on Windows. Bare fingers report a constant pressure of 0.5 on most browsers and 0 for tilt. If a stylus shows zero pressure, check that the browser has stylus permission and that the device is not in a low-power mode that disables digitizer features.

Does this test work on a laptop trackpad?

Partially. Trackpads expose gestures (pinch, two-finger scroll) through PointerEvents on macOS and Windows, but most browsers filter them before they reach the page. Direct touchscreen laptops work fully. For an accurate touch panel test, use the actual screen rather than the trackpad.

Why do some contacts disappear when I add more fingers?

This is called palm rejection or ghost touch — the panel firmware drops contacts it considers accidental. It is normal up to your panel's hardware limit, but premature drops (losing the 4th finger on a 10-point panel) point to digitizer faults, a damaged screen protector, or moisture on the glass. Clean the screen and retry before suspecting hardware failure.

What other input tools are on DeviceCheckOnline Labs?

The Sensors motion tool tests gyroscope and orientation — the other side of mobile input. The CPU benchmark shows whether touch lag is your panel or your processor. For displays, pair this with our Color blindness simulator to audit how interactive elements appear to users with CVD.
